چکیده

As computer systems become increasingly complicated, it is harder for users to maintain an overview. In many professional applications, user tasks are spread out over many windows located on different virtual screens, and sometimes displayed on a single physical screen. The design of the interface for this must enable the user to understand the relative locations of these windows. Studies of navigation in airplanes and automobiles have established that egomotion is an important contributor to people’s sense of orientation: people can rapidly, accurately, and with little conscious effort tell the direction of movement from visual flow patterns displayed on a screen. It has also been reported that this perception of egomotion can be elicited from computer graphics that simulate the flow of a visual scene moving past an observer. This paper proposes an interface that uses such visual flow patterns to support users navigating between application windows on screens that are virtually placed around the user. Three-dimensional background images on a computer screen are generated to give users a sense of egomotion. One “home” window is located in the direction of egomotion, and serves as a reference point for the application acting as a main menu or a starting/exit point. Users can switch between multiple windows located on both sides of the home window, just like turning their head right or left. When they turn to the direction of their screen, the flow in the background helps them to stay aware of the direction of the home window. The proposed interface was implemented into an e-mail application and validated through an experiment. Eighteen undergraduate students participated as subjects. Performance data showed that the proposed method had a significant advantage in reducing errors. Subjective evaluations also indicated a significant advantage of the proposed interface for a user’s overview of a complex environment.

Selectivity to Translational Egomotion in Human Brain Motion Areas

The optic flow generated when a person moves through the environment can be locally decomposed into several basic components, including radial, circular, translational and spiral motion. Since their analysis plays an important part in the visual perception and control of locomotion and posture it is likely that some brain regions in the primate dorsal visual pathway are specialized to distingui...

Segmenting Independently Moving Objects from Egomotion Flow Fields

We describe a robust algorithm for the estimation of egomotion from noisy optic flow fields. The method is nonlinear, conceptually simple, and corrects for the well-known bias to which many egomotion-estimation algorithms are prone. Furthermore, techniques from robust statistics are employed to render the algorithm insensitive to the presence of large numbers of highly correlated outliers. Thes...

Sensor Fusion of Structure-from-Motion, Bathymetric 3D, and Beacon-Based Navigation Modalities

This paper describes an approach for the fusion of 3D data underwater obtained from multiple sensing modalities. In particular, we examine the combination of imagebased Structure-From-Motion (SFM) data with bathymetric data obtained using pencil-beam underwater sonar, in order to recover the shape of the seabed terrain. We also combine image-based egomotion estimation with acousticbased and ine...

Optic flow helps humans learn to navigate through synthetic environments.

Self-movement through an environment generates optic flow, a potential source of heading information. But it is not certain that optic flow is sufficient to support navigation, particularly navigation along complex, multi-legged paths. To address this question, we studied human participants who navigated synthetic environments with and without salient optic flow. Participants used a keyboard to...

Real-Time Obstacle Avoidance Using an MPEG-Processor-Based Optic Flow Sensor

This paper describes a vision system for obstacle detection in mobile robot navigation. The system uses an image processing board equipped with an MPEG motion estimation processor that calculates a robust optic-flow-like vector field in real-time. This field is then evaluated by algorithms running in software on the host PC. As the solutions to the general problem of structure and motion from o...
